This is the final great American novel.

Most anything by McCarthy, although I'd probably start with The Road. The novel consistently portrays a doomed world from start to finish. People have criticized it for being largely uneventful at that.

This or Blood Meridian. That should sufficiently crush her spirits and awaken her to the harsh reality of human nature.

I really don't get into fiction, and in fact, this is the first fiction novel I've read in over a decade.

Based on this novel, could /lit/ recommend anything else I might like?

I rarely lurk here, and to be honest, I don't read much literature in general. Nonetheless, I'm hoping /lit/ could pitch some recommendations.

Pic related is the first novel I've read in years. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and it got me to thinking about getting back into fiction. Are there any recommended novels based on similar settings and themes?

I'm very interested in post-apocalyptic fiction in general - mostly that based on nuclear conflicts. I definitely can't get into zombie apocalypse or similar nonsense. It's just too hard to suspend disbelief.

I have a hard time stomaching most fiction. I actually haven't read anything else by McCarthy though. I thought about picking up Blood Meridian, but Western settings don't normally appeal to me.

I really enjoyed The Road by Cormac McCarthy.

Can /lit/ recommend any other books that are as bleak as The Road is?

Also, what are your thoughts on it?
