I'm not even Italian but you can't down play their contribution. For literature, they had Dante and Petrarch, who created the sonnet which was copied by the French and English and Spanish with the greatest enthusiasm, all while stealing his themes, style, and imagery. The Renaissance began in Italy during the 1300s and slowly spread to the rest of Europe over the next 200 years. Both the French and English courts invited Italians to ascend their culture.
De Pictura is one of the greatest contribution in not only painting but also philosophy and literature.

It taught the west the idea of perspective.
