I only have two cormac mccarthy novels. Because I happened to find them at op shops. The Road. Which I've since read. And cities of the plain. And I haven't read it yet because it's apparently sequel. But, is Cities of the Plain OK to read standalone? Can I just read it now?

Are there any other authors who don't get inside of their character's head much like McCarthy? Who sort of just describe the scene as it is. Hemmingway seems like he would be this, but even though his prose is simple, a lot of it does concern the internal thoughts and musings of the characters in question.

Suttree is the patrician's choice. Just about all of his others are worth a read with the possible exclusion of the weaker Orchard Keeper and Outer Dark.
