Gore Vidal claimed that the language of the 20th century, (and exponentially the 21th), was the image over the written world. Literary critic Harold Bloom also seemed to support the idea that the novel, a fairly recent form of communication (17th century at the earliest, only dominant after the 18th century), was also at an increasingly evident risk of being phased out. What does /lit/ think? Will we live to see the novel go the way of the narrative poem?

Even if I did, you yourself would have to be able to view it with no bias and think about it before coming to a conclusion.
I believe in god because the alternative is pointless by its own definition. I used to not believe in god because of all the suffering in the world and I turned towards science. But it fails in giving purpose. The "values" it instills are from people to scared to face the fact that they themselves believe in the abyss at the end and would do anything to feel meaning in their own lives that they feel are just as pointless as a grain of sand. Nothing wrong with knowing or believing in evolution and the big bang or any other theory but once you see that it leads to no real spiritual or meaningful self fulfilment then its pointless.

I chose to believe in god because I see purpose in it. I educated myself and found out suffering is caused by man and that we could have a utopia at this very moment if not for greed and evil. Evil that man has chosen because of his own free will. Just as I choose to be a good and try and help people others choose evil because they can. I have weighed my choices and choose not to believe in the abyss. Not because I can't imagine it, but because god gives meaning and those who choose to can find it.

Congrats anon, you and your degenerate colleagues can develop atom bombs big enough to shatter the earth into asteroids but you can't stop the breakdown of society and all the ills that come with it. Material contrivance will never make men happy or satisfied. It is written that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. It is written that all is vain.

HOW to kéep—is there ány any, is there none such, nowhere known some, bow or brooch or braid or brace, láce, latch or catch or key to keep
Back beauty, keep it, beauty, beauty, beauty, … from vanishing away?
Ó is there no frowning of these wrinkles, rankéd wrinkles deep,
Dówn? no waving off of these most mournful messengers, still messengers, sad and stealing messengers of grey?
No there ’s none, there ’s none, O no there ’s none,
Nor can you long be, what you now are, called fair,
Do what you may do, what, do what you may,
And wisdom is early to despair:
Be beginning; since, no, nothing can be done
To keep at bay
Age and age’s evils, hoar hair,
Ruck and wrinkle, drooping, dying, death’s worst, winding sheets, tombs and worms and tumbling to decay;
So be beginning, be beginning to despair.
O there ’s none; no no no there ’s none:
Be beginning to despair, to despair,
Despair, despair, despair, despair.

The christian canon forms the metaphysical foundation for western society. It affects your actions, your thoughts and everyone else in ways that aren't exactly evident, so reading it is definitely enlightening.

I say "Christian Canon" rather than the Bible because the bible itself was metatextual in its inception since it came from multiple different sources, and it continues to be metatextual with the additions of what are considered great books (Dante, Milton, Kierkegaard, Augustine, etc)

tldr you can't understand yourself without understanding the bible

>nowhere in the Bible does it say "never lie to anyone"

I was taking you seriously for a while, but this thread really is 8/8 unadulter8d b8, isn't it? Here's some verses for you to offer us some mental gymnastics on, if you so desire:

>Exodus 20:16 "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."
>Leviticus 18:11 "You shall not... lie to one another."
>Psalms 34:13 "Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
>Proverbs 12:22 "The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy."
>Proverbs 6:16-19 "There are six things that the Lord hates....a lying tongue....a false witness who breathes out lies...
>Proverbs 19:19 "A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish."
>Zephaniah 3:13 "They will do no wrong, they will tell no lies. A deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouths."
>John 8:44 "You belong to your father, the devil...for he is a liar, and the father of lies."
>Colossians 3:9 "Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices..."
>Ephesians 4:25 "Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor..."
>1 Timothy 4:2 "Such teachings come from hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
>Revelation 21:8 "But as for....all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with sulfur..."
>Revelation 22:15 "Outside..<is> everyone who loves and practices falsehood."

This one might be particularly relevant to the discussion:

>Proverbs 21:6 "The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a snare of death."

But I think the key to OP's worldview might be (>>10024419) "life is whatever you want it to be." Yes indeed, a popular catchprase among antinomians who would justify their behavior by saying that (>>10027867) they are a sinner so they might as well keep sinning after being saved. Why stop at calling philosophy bullshit? EVERYTHING is bullshit when you can pick and choose whatever particularly comfy, cozy belief you so desire. And why shouldn't he? The Enigma of Reason is a fine book which details the way we developed logic to justify our actions. Either that or OP really is a Grade-A rascal, trolling us all and having a warm, healthy laugh about it. Bless him anyways, why get too angry?

I read it all. Overall it has very good prose, beautiful even in some parts, but in everything else it's ultimately absurd. My wife is Christian though so it helps in that regard, even though she hasn't read it all the way through.

so when are emoticons going to replace tiring and excessively long description?
just imagine some realist novel with emoticons in it
>dimitri felt saddened, and within a fraction of time he was on his knees crying :'(
like just replace useless stuff with emoticons. it also adds some kind of tragedy
