I want to write a story that has a series of twists that are based on established information but are near- impossible to figure out for the audience. Is there an established way to do this? Where do I even start?

My gripes have nothing to do with the books themselves, I think they're fine enough as children's literature.

Most of my personal irritation comes from the fanbase, who, because HP was maybe some of the only stuff they read during their formative years in middle/high school, have become convinced that anything not relating to some fantastical power-fantasy fiction is irrelevant, offensive, and too far out of their reach to be paid attention to. They consciously lock themselves in a playpen and refuse to come out, instead insisting that the rest of the world join them in a colorful but ultimately empty and unfulfilling world.
