I just happen to get off on grammatical contraptions and poetic somersaults. I think its the enjoyment of an undisciplined mind. However, there is something to be said for a sentence that indicates its own complexity rather than its proposition. Snobbishness is another reason for erudition. Speaking in a privileged code is attractive, but is beginning to tire. Pure academese is much stupider than any simple dialect. Empty wordplay (when linguistic play is inappropriate) only signals the author's insecurity. A bit of overwriting can indicate earnestness with playfulness; the reader appreciates friendly gestures that privilege her as the author's intellectual peer. She enjoys being reminded of her intelligence. Nod too much at your reader's intellect, however, and your head will fall off. You must speak both to the groundlings and to those at eye-level.

"Oh, it offends me to the soul to hear a robustious periwig-pated fellow tear a passion to tatters, to very rags, to split the ears of the groundlings, who for the most part are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumb-shows and noise. I would have such a fellow whipped for o'erdoing Termagant. It out-Herods Herod. Pray you, avoid it."
