“Happy the creators of pessimistic systems! Besides taking refuge in the fact of having made something, they can exult in their explanation of universal suffering, and include themselves in it.”
― Fernando Pessoa, The Book of Disquiet

“The fanatical atheists are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who—in their grudge against traditional religion as the "opium of the masses"—cannot hear the music of the spheres.”
― Albert Einstein

"Indeed Allah desires to repel all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and purify you with a thorough purification."
― God

I've been thinking about reading this and also share it with a friend who "has" derealization. Would this book help him or motivate him to kill himself?

Apart from No Longer Human, I also recommend Book of Disquiet. It's not directly about depression but it is depressive

Please recommend novels that are more enjoyable to read in brief spurts over time as opposed to long sittings. Pic related.

I've been reading this book for five years and I'm only two thirds done. I only ever read one or two passages every few months when mostly when I'm feeling bad and need some solace. I read other books in the meantime but this one's special. I can always come back to it and feel right at home. How do you feel about this one?
