The opposition, I assume, is made on the basis that the personal refers to a unique life-experience, while the purported opposite is abstracted and numbered and lacking in life-essence.

You can make such an opposition, but I contest it on three grounds: negatively, these two sides are both limited in scope, both the scientific and the personal reach only insofar as people do; second, those impersonal forces, the basic elements of the world, are as "alive" as you and I. Lastly, I prefer a third option: such abstractions do not exist outside people, as people do not exist outside the world; they are reached through consensus, more than anything, of a subconscious kind; they are the basis and expression of human community, of human relationship, which forms the basis of all personal experience, they are a code, not unlike the structure of any work of art, that is, if not necessarily unique, necessarily characteristic to our existence. Science is simply this extended to the whole human species.

How am I underselling it? It's you people that constantly go on about how Chomsky revolutionized linguistics when he neither started nor finished it. And seriously what has Chomsky done that he gets a free pass to talk shit about everyone and everything he feels like? He's the exact kind of person that Zizek criticizes all the time. Sure you're a Marxist, sure you're correct, sure you're smart, but you're attacking the game rather than the players, and it's led to a cartoon like Trump get elected. And boy, isn't it so comfortable to talk shit about the thinkers who've actually had to go through communist regimes and Europe's reconstruction from your liberal hugbox the other side of the Atlantic?
