>>I know this will sound dumb, but what are the 'definitive' versions of his works? I've come across tons of versions of his works can never decide which one to buy (Mainly because I look online).

There's a lot of academic dicking-about over whether or not the Hans Walter Gabler edition was a mistake.

As far as I can recall, the only thing that Gabler changed, which might change the meaning of the book, is when Stephen Dedalus asks his dead mother's ghost to tell him "the word known to all men". I think in the original 1922 publication he doesn't get an answer, but Gabler found some draft that suggested the answer is "love". Something like that? I dunno, google it.

FWIW I read the Gabler edition.

You should read "The Human Stain" by Philip Roth just after reading "Kingsblood Royal" by Sinclair Lewis.

Then read "The Plot Against America" by Philip Roth just after reading "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis.

Then consider whether Philip Roth is just ripping off his ideas from Sinclair Lewis, because Sinclair Lewis has been dead for 60 years and can't complain, and because Sinclair Lewis won the Nobel Prize, which Philip Roth desperately wishes he could do.

Yours in Christ,
Harold Bloom

Nah, he isn't against multiculturalism or minorities. He's a freakin socialist and admits it whenever he's asked about it. He just doesn't want to see anything besides literature in the study of literature. The study of literature should be about literature first and foremost and not about skin color, ethnicity, sexuality, politics, etc.

Here's a picture of Bloom at age 32.
