Technological Slavery

"(c) “Today,” you write, “one can… adopt whatever beliefs or lifestyle
one wants. One can also easily travel, experiencing other cultures….”
But to what end? What, in practical terms, does one accomplish
by changing one’s beliefs or lifestyle, or by experiencing other cultures?
Essentially nothing—except whatever fun one gets from it. People don’t need
only fun, they need purposeful work, and they need to have control not only
over the pleasure-oriented aspects of their lives but over the serious, practical,
purposeful, life-and-death aspects. That kind of control is not possible
in modern society because we are all at the mercy of large organizations.
Up to a point, having fun is good for you. But it’s not an adequate substitute
for serious, purposeful activity. For lack of this kind of activity people in our
society get bored. They try to relieve their boredom by having fun. They seek
new kicks, new thrills, new adventures. They masturbate their emotions by
experimenting with new religions, new art-forms, travel, new cultures, new
philosophies, new technologies. But still they are never satisfied, they always
want more, because all of these activities are purposeless. People don’t realize
that what they really lack is serious, practical, purposeful work—work that is
under their own control and is directed to the satisfaction of their own most
essential, practical needs."

want to know what the really crazy thing is??? when you finally do start having sex and you realize that all the angst, anxiety, purposelessness and despair come creeping back when repeated momentary bouts of pleasure can't resolve your inner disturbance but only make you feel like an addict and a shallow failure. literally will start to just feel like masturbation, in most cases worse. a man needs much much more than sex. he needs freedom, power, dignity, and purposeful work.

Read Technological Slavery. You'll learn more about the world in 300 pages and 10 hours of your life than 4 years of college. Then start reading the list of works cited in that book.

So I read this the other day and I'm totally convinced. Scientists and technicians are self-serving criminals for promoting the growth of an evil system which is enslaving the human race and destroying all that is natural and wild and pure in this world.

Why don't people focus on technology as the independent variable determining politics? Politics is a distraction. For example, if you think your lives are regulated now, just wait until the scientists and technicians (and the corporations and governments paying them and giving them status and power) make gene editing mainstream. Then your genes will have to be regulated, if only because unregulated genetic manipulation would clearly be disastrous.

Is literature honestly a form of escapism for you guys? Is it "entertainment" that keeps you distracted from the horrors that technological growth, by itself, is unleashing on the world?
