Surely the middle "that" should be italicized or in quotation marks.

In the past, there seemed to be a sense of perpetual degradation because the church had been abandoned and there was *still* war, violence, disease, and corruption. We are still without religion, but we're also without the noble causes that a society must face when death, suffering, pain, and misery are everywhere. Whereas that generation faced their evils and came out on the other side somehow, we have no such cause to challenge us. Instead, we stare into the abyss of pointless, vain, materialistic consumerism. It never goes away. We don't get sick. We don't die in a trench in Verdun or Vietnam. We just drift through from one day to the next, defining ourselves by arbitrary and meaningless things, talking more but saying less, learning more but understanding less. Feeling more but appreciating less.

....this, my friends, is the utilitarian utopia: a sphere of empirical success drowning in the abyss of meaninglessness.
