How do I enjoy Either/Or? What kind of madman writes two solid volumes that begin with 300 pages of "as if" romanticist rambling essays about Mozart and Greek tragedy? I understand now why everybody loves to cite Kierkegaard as an important philosopher and vaguely say that he influenced Heidegger, but nobody actually says anything about him beyond a few wikipedia things (knight of faith, Abraham and Isaac, and MAYBE diary of a seducer). It's because nobody, not one person since the 1840s, has actually read volume one of Either/Or. Everybody burns out and skips ahead to the Diary, or drops the book altogether.

The only person who seems to have engaged meaningfully with Kierkegaard is Barth, and he didn't even read more than 2 or 3 of the easiest writings. NOBODY has read Either/Or cover to cover in over 150 years. Anybody referencing Kierkegaard is referencing summaries of his "key ideas" they read elsewhere, in summaries written by people who read the shorter and easier books and also did not read Either/Or.
