I'm currently reading pic related and the author is talking about all the research going on in moral psychology that offers support to Hume's view that "Reason is, and ought to be, the slave of the passions." This, Haidt argues, is part of the reason why it's so hard to convince people to change their opinion on moral issues, even when you give them a solid argument. I'm only on chapter four, but has anyone else read Haidt's book? I've always been sympathetic to moral intuitionism, yet I have been an even bigger proponent of the idea that reason is the preeminent guide to our moral behavior. I think it's disappointing that reason likely plays a much smaller role in making moral judgements than has typically been thought in the past.
