I read Catcher after almost everything else Salinger wrote. Nine Stories is undoubtedly his best published work, followed by Franny and Zooey and finally the twin novellas Raise High/Seymour. His uncollected stories are hit-or-miss, but even they are better than following Holden around for nearly 150 pages. I don’t fucking care if you read it at 16 and thought, My God, this boomer’s a genius. I read it at 24 and thought, My God, what have I done!?
