I just finished The Last Days of Socrates and I must say I am extremely unimpressed. All of Socrates' arguments in these dialogues were either (1) blatantly fallacious, (2) unconvincing, or (3) right but trivial and very convolutedly explained (eg. the Euthyphro Dilemma). Given how excited I was to delve into "the best Western thought has to offer", I can only describe this as a severe let-down. Is this really all philosophy is?

I just finished The Last Days of Socrates and I must say I am extremely unimpressed. All of Socrates' arguments in these dialogues were either (1) blatantly fallacious, (2) unconvincing, or (3) right but trivial and very convolutedly explained (eg. the Euthyphro Dilemma). Given the amount of praise Plato gets, being hailed regularly as he is as "the greatest philosopher", I am now incredulous regarding the value of ancient philosophy and even non-analytic philosophy in general. If this is the best it has to offer, it must not offer much.
Now I am going to carry on in the hopes that these early dialogues are not representative of Plato's mature thought, but I am quite wary going forward. Given how excited I was to delve into "the best Western thought has to offer", I can only describe this as a severe let-down.
