A teacher disappears in front of class.. child book

Read as a ten year old. He ends up going to a strange white place where he can conjure up random materials. I think the teacher was a substitute? The teacher gradually goes invisible in front of the kids. The cover was skinny hardcover & yellow? it shows an illustration on the cover of the teacher slowly fading away in front of the class. Also there was no color. Just black and white drawings.

I read this book in the early 90s USA
