When I was a child, I had aspirations of becoming a great writer of literature. Now that I'm 19 years old and an adult, I live in a shitty apartment remotely working out of a developing country translating degenerate Japanese porn into English for a living. Books about the disappointment of unfulfilled dreams?

I spent the past two years taking elective classes in Latin and Attic Greek as an undergrad at a prestigious uni, and I honestly don't think it was worth it. The work was incredibly hard, tedious (mostly just rote memorisation of vocabulary, noun declensions, verb conjugations, accent positions, etc. and translation exercises back and forth between the languages), and it took up all of my free time outside of class just to pass. Furthermore, I don't feel that a classical education helped to develop my character, or to make me a more virtuous and/or worldly person, or to even give me a less superficial understanding of classical literature or anything like that (beyond maybe poetry). On the contrary, I now have a recurring lust for teenage boys in the bloom of youth--most likely due to how dripping with homoeroticism the whole thing is, and I have barely anything to show for my studies except for a good grasp of grammar (thanks to the nightmare that is Attic Greek), and bragging rights that I read the whole of the New Testament in the original Greek over the holidays. I have no friends since highschool, no girlfriend (I do have a job)--I'm a 19 year old pretentious, anorexic virgin loser who spends all of his time indoors. AMA.

Just don't watch porn, and also don't have that much sex, pair bond with people. It is going to be hard to find someone with those convictions, and even harder to find someone who doesn't think of you as a lesser for those convictions in a relationship, but it's worth it when you find your match. Above and beyond all else your focus should always be on yourself and your spirit, with due consideration to who you can help so as to not death spiral into narcissism and looking down upon others.

Many of you are in this not because you like books or literature, but because you came from anime, games, comics or movies and wanted to tell your stories in these formats, despite the means and resources.

However, we all know that a frustrated filmmaker or artist will never be able to make a good literary work, at least not as good as someone who loves the written word and likes literature. So, I ask you: how do you deal with this fact, or how do you mentally reprogram yourself to start to like literature?

I'm of the kind who tries to reprogram themselves to like literature more than other mediums. I grew up watching anime and playing games, and I always had a interest in storytelling. But it was only from the age of 16 (today I am 24) that I started reading and taking literature seriously to improve my writing techniques. Although I strive to genuinely like literature, the feeling of being an imposter or less than those who have always loved it is undeniable.

Assyriology BA. Very passionate about the subject, but the additional baggage (interaction, superfluous courses etc.) are tough to handle and still stay in balance. I'm too autistically interested in the field to ever consider dropping out, though.

Maybe you're right, but I'm going to wait for a second opinion. For all I know your definition of cringe means slightly unfunny.
