im reading his unibus essay on how tv has effected people. a lot of modern trends bother me:
> constant grooming and vanity
> social media presence
> identity expressed through products
.. i buck these trends, but if this is just how people think, communicate and interpret the world now, do we really even have a choice? if the entire culture is learning to speak spanish and you stubbornly stick to english, you wont be understood.

Anyone else find it useful to hear how an author reads, or how he reads his own work? DFW is very comma heavy, almost typical of the Post-Modern chain of non-sequitur writing that I've seen from a few trendy authors. Reading IJ I was stumbling with cadence in my head and audibly after I started to notice my fumbling mental steps over the words. However, hearing I started listening to this live reading of DFW and it seems to make a bit mroe sense now https://youtu.be/GwS5pEfcQNk

Anyone else find themselves having that kind of problem when reading or if hearing the author themselves read the work helps that sort of thing any?

"If you've still got a nation of people sitting in front of screens, pretending, interacting with images rather than each other, feeling lonely and so needing more and more images, you're going to have the same basic problem, and the better the images get, the more tempting it's going to be to interact with images rather than other people, and I think the emptier it's going to get."

Daily reminder that you are a pleb if you don't focus on STEM while in college.
