I just posted this in another thread, but Ursula Le Guin's essay on existing v aspirational utopia - using California as its primary setting - is worth reading! https://www.fifthestate.org/archive/382-spring-2010/non-euclidean-view-california-cold-place-1982/

Have you seen the other stuff Brand is doing now? Long Now Foundation sponsoring that 10,000 yr clock, de-extinction for ecological restoration, long science laboratories amongst bristlecone pine, etc. The clock is built on Jeff Bezos' land, presumably in concert with him. Crazy the gradient of "selling out" that can exist: Stewart Brand is clearly an agile thinker who is mobilizing the assets he has available to... inspire mankind, I guess? In so doing, he's aligned himself with this power that's antithetical to the whole open source, free thought, skilled labor movement he came up in. The projects themselves are incredible - I'll definitely be making the clock pilgrimage when the time comes. Still, one has to wonder what he feels in moments of doubt. A similar dynamic seems to pervade a lot of what you mention - it's the growing pains of high tech capital, maybe, as it struggled to accommodate tripped-out radicals.
