>Perhaps a future survey of the needs of mankind will reveal it to be thoroughly undesirable that all men act identically; rather, in the interest of ecumenical goals, for whole stretches of human time special tasks, perhaps in some circumstances even evil tasks, would have to be set.
In any event, if mankind is to keep from destroying itself by such a conscious overall government, we must discover first a knowledge of the conditions of culture, a knowledge surpassing all previous knowledge, as a scientific standard for ecumenical goals. This is the enormous task of the great minds of the next century.

To what extent was Hitler -- and the NSDAP at large -- influenced by Nietzsche?

Many of Nietzsche's friends and his philosophical admirers have tried to shield Nietzsche from the criticism that he is a proto-Nazi, and in fact, it doesn't work, Nietzsche is a proto-Nazi.
There is a strong tinge of racism in his work; there is a strong tinge of refined cruelty in his work.
Insofar as he was misused in the 20th century, by the Nazis and by other racially-oriented hate groups, Nietzsche is at least in part to blame.
Those who like Nietzsche's work, who want to shield it from this criticism, will point out, with considerable justification, that he would have nothing but contempt for the misuse of his work in the 20th century, but it won't entirely absolve him of the results of his statements. Because after all, Nietzsche would have contempt for everybody, whether they adopt his position or not.
Nietzsche, as he puts it beautifully, says "I write in order to be misinterpreted." If we only have a series of misinterpretations of Nietzsche, because he thinks there is no one canonical interpretation, then he should bear the brunt of responsibility for everything, both good and bad that comes out of his work.

What did Hitler really think of Nietzsche? Do we have anything substantial on record about this? I'm already aware that Nietzsche's Übermensch and "great politics" don't quite fit the Nazi mold, but did Hitler have his own private idea of it?

What was he thinking?
