On the beach, a whole museum of oceanic curiosities. Stones, large and small, lay scattered in the dark sand amidst several half-buried clams. The most beautiful of the stones go clattering into my bucket. Little pools of salted foam rise from shallow valleys in the sand, and a lone crab creeps ahead plucking each leg delicately, as if playing a harp. The flaking carcass of a fish lies still. Face frozen blank, it stares out at the sea.

I come upon a cream seashell at my feet, surface flecked over in little dashes of coral pink. It stands erect, its bottom half wedged in a lump of tightly packed sand. I stoop to pluck it— it is an apple of the sea— and run my hands across its surface. I feel its swooping ridges and smooth hollows, the both touched by lingering grains of sand. I stand for a long while and stare out to sea, then turn back to the cottage. A long road winds beyond, across the dunes. There, brick chimneys raise columns of smoke, the village awoken.

You wrote a whole lot about pretentiousness, I'd remind you that it is simply an artistic medium. Passing judgement like that would be akin to calling painting as a whole boring or meaningless. Poetry might seem pretentious, because the learning curve is steep, but that's a part of what makes it great. Once you "get" it there is a whole new medium of art that pretty much distills the most aesthetically pleasing aspects of novels and combines it with rhthym and organization that provides a sort of form, like the lines of a painting. I love a person more than I've every loved any person in my life. I've been close to women, kissed women, and have had sex with women. I've been close to men, kissed men, and have had sex with men. Yet this love is more passionate, and more confusing than any of these previous relationships. It's a crush. It's love from a distance meaning that I haven't even touched the woman, but there is love. In fact the love is mutual, so my friends have noted. Yet besides all this love the relationship is plagued by distance. We have very little in common. She is christian I am atheist. She is outgoing, I am introverted. She runs, I hate running. On top of all this her friends seem to form a wall between her and I. Whenever we have a conversation, they steal it. They steal it the same way they would in junior high school, these women are evil and immature. Besides all this, I will have her. I can see this future as clearly as anyone can see the present. Hell, maybe it will turn out that we'll hate each other, maybe we won't want to spend another second seeing the other's face. But I will get my fair chance, believe that!

Any info or source on how modernist art centered around intellectual ideas (as in the mind) relates to classical and romantic art that attempts to embody or transcend "the idea" (god)? Is impressionism just an advanced form of romanticism concerned only with embodying aesthetic idealism? How does post-modernism relate? Or am I out of it, how do I into artistic philosophy
