What does /lit/ think about brazilian authors such as Machado de Assis?

That's a widely held opinion only because no one outside Brazil know of Machado de Assis.

I wonder why Machado de Assis isn't more hyped by this kind of people who are always wanting for some non-white, non-Western literary genius.

He was a black Brazilian in XIXth century Rio de Janeiro writing high literature influenced by Shakespeare and the Greeks. My guess about why he wasn't appropriated by the woke crowd is this >>11110986

They don't want merely non-white, non-Western authors. They want authors who are actively opposed to white people and Western civilization. Machado de Assis was black and Latin American, but he admired white culture and assimilated into it, so he doesn't work for SJW purposes.

Can you imagine being born in a fucking Brazilian slum in the 19th century, frequent school for 2 years and from there become a self-taught polyglot, unbelievably well read and cultured, and write a huge, masterful ouvre that spans basically every literary genre, which rightfully places you in the uncontested number one spot as the most accomplished author in your language?

Why aren't Brazilian writers as known by Americans as other writers from Latin America?

As a Brazilian I obviously read a lot of authors from my country, and I really love the way that some books like "O Alienista" ou "Lucíola" are written but in the foreign scenario those books are rarely mentioned. This kind of thing also happens with some authors from Africa and other Latin countries who became overshadowed due to theirs birthplace.

I say prose, because there were greater poetry writers and, even though they were black, they were also Latin American.
