Has anyone on here become interested in novels after previously losing interest? I haven't greatly enjoyed a novel for years, apart from a few James Ellroy novels (also The Fountainhead and some Houellebecq novels, now that I remember).

It really seems like the novel is an irrelevant, dead art form. You can sort all literary fiction in to either incoherent, Avant Garde, emperor has no clothes post modernism / stream of consciousness, or the Franzen realist style.

Do you have any honest to God enjoyable recommendations? I know this is the most generic request forever but I'm going to go ahead and ignore all recommendations of anything older than 50 years because it's likely something you're told you have to like to seem smart.
