the web article I linked is a neat though experiment that might be somewhat related to what you are interested in, i.e.: we may already be living in a digital world in the sense that.. our actual brains are being stored in vats, and a computer system is sending inputs directly into our brains, such that we have the illusion that we are in a body, living our lives out-and-about in physical space. Basically The Matrix movies.

Greg Egan's Permutation City might scratch your itch as well, but that's an actual sci-fi book, and not necessarily what you had originally asked for. it's the shit, though. wonderful book. That deals more with "mind uploading", which is also a bit related
