Post sci fi books that don’t suck. I’ve read most of the standard names when it comes to sci fi writers that are supposed to be good like Wolfe, Dick, Le Guin, etc. The only book from any of them that I liked somewhat was pic related. Maybe the genre just isn’t for me but I loved it as a kid. Post the lesser known good stuff please.

Can anyone recommend me some Gene Wolfe books that are primarily science fiction like The Fifth Head of Cerberus? I read it recently and enjoyed it, but most of his works that I see discussed seem to be (in whole or part) fantasy works, which is a genre I don't particularly care for.

I can't decide if I actually enjoyed this book. I can't deny that it was well written and interesting, but it took a lot of effort took to read, and ultimately it was just a neat sci-fi story. It seems like all the prose and obfuscation was spent on something of little substance that didn't warrant it and thus wasn't really worth the difficulty. Not sure if I want to read anymore Gene Wolfe books.

Just finished pic related. It was a fascinating book which I think I'll need to reread at some point in the future. The writing gave the impression that there was always something more going on that what I was able to figure out, though I feel I understood the majority of it since I read it carefully. But for anyone who has read it, what is your opinion about why the first few pages had been cut out of Marsch's notebook? I read a theory online but I found it unsatisfying, and my own thoughts are not settled. I think it may correlate with the use of fanciful names in the notebook such as Hagsmith, as perhaps V.R.T. modified the notebook in certain ways to prevent anyone from tracking Marsch's past movements (I also speculate this is the reason he killed the cat, since it was the only other being that knew Marsch died and not V.R.T.), though that raises the issue of how he could have done it convincingly with his poor handwriting.

How did he manage to write great sci-fi where literally nothing happens?

My favorite part is with the alzabo and the cabin, and the part of the humans that lobotomize themselves to escape the burden of thought that follows. But that's the second volume isn't it? Oh well. All the bizarre sections are top notch to be honest, and there is a good number of them.

Gunna read pic related next week. I hope its good.
