His philosophy was accused of being bourgeoisie, and so, as the title suggests, Sartre came up with Existentialism is a Humanism as a defense against those accusations. I think it's pretty good, but it's not representative of Sartre's philosophy as a whole and not terribly similar with Being and Nothingness. Personally I believe B&N is a great book and deserves to be read more on /lit/.

Sartre lists five solutions to deal with the Other, each one more disgusting than the last: Hate, Masochism, Sadism, Love, and Indifference.

Hate is when you avoid the Other so that they won't judge you at all. See the Japanese hikikomori who actively avoid society.

Masochism is when you submit to the Other by simply believing that their judgement of you is correct and your judgement of yourself is of no consequence. For example, a girl is called a loser by all her peers, and she comes to believe that she truly is a loser.

Sadism is when you force the Other to think a certain way, or get them to stop thinking all together. This is Stalin killing anyone who doesn't worship him and think of him as an idol.

Indifference is when you don't care what other people think of you at all. E.g. übermenschen and autists.

Love is a bit complicated. Basically, you find someone who thinks of you positively and ignore everyone else. So, if I were an artist, I would want a wife who thinks my art is great. And if someone else thought my art was terrible, they must be wrong, because my wife thinks it's good.
