It's not. Cook CAN write, people just disagree with his terse style. On some level most people want their fantasy prose to flowery and purple.

that doesn't make any sense, anon. they're fantasy terms.

>I am currently reading it and I don't like how the author presents Croaker as this slacker-type character who always needs to be reminded of his duties
That's pretty much only in the first book. Basically, before he gets saddled with more and more responsibility.

Unrelated, but it's always weird to me when I see how some people want to "get into classic literature". Was it not part of your mandatory reading and reports in high school or something?

Yes. It's nowhere near as GRIMDARK as you may have heard it described, though. If that's the appeal for you. First book essentially works as standalone with an open ending as Cook was testing the waters to see how well it does, and if you like it definitely read the first trilogy + Silver Spike.

I like Cook's writing style, but most people don't. They'll take flowery prose and elaborate descriptions over "we came, we fought, we won" approach the takes. For some reason I really like how he hand waves arguably an incredibly important battle and follow two characters who are sent off to ventilate some people with arrows instead.

>Glen Cook. Everyone will talk about Black Company, but my favorite of his is the Garrett P.I. series, basically Nero Wolve in a fantasy setting with more action.

I always found Garrett PI massively overlooked because everyone always props Cook's dark fantasy works.

>there will never be another Lady or BC book
We'll get A Pitiless Rain at some point. I just hope that one will take place as a proper epilogue for Lady and not a revisit to the books of the south.

>Black Company was great for two books and the next two were totally meh.

Books of the North + Silver Spike are good. Then it goes into fantasy India and becomes divisive.

First Black Company novel was also notably better because it was essentially self-contained with an open "what could happen in 23 years?" ending.

Croaker. Wonder what it must've looked like to see him together with what seemed like a girl barely 20, if that.
