Pessimism is the only correct philosophical/literary school, and has never been refuted.
The founding father of stoicism killed himself after breaking his foot.
If life hurts you enough (horrible accident, disease, torture, etc) you will be begging to die, surrounded by people who keep you alive and agonizing until the last second.
They'll tell you it's about righteousness, about your well being, but it's entirely self serving. Life insurance and hospitals can make money off of you even if you're a vegetable (perhaps especially if you're one).

If mankind ever truly ascends to a decent level of empathy suicide clinics would be legalized and you'd pay a couple hundred bucks of your own for lethal injections, because you can decide what you want to do with your life. The fact this is not the norm even in countries where euthanasia is legal should tell you what kind of interests are being served.
