I have seen pic related recommended a lot, to people who enjoy the lore of Dark Souls. What am I in for? Is it worth the read?

Is there anything quite like it?

I'm still 3/4 in, but it's already one of the best books I've ever read. The language is beautiful, the characters are all weird but delightful and unique, and I wanted more books that felt like it after I finish the trilogy. I have already read Miéville which cites him as a big influence but he's not even close to Peake, and I'm to read Gloriana by Moorcock.

Doesn't need to be fantasy specifically.

Your picture's illustration style reminded of this, dunno if you've read it. Also it's not a fantasy novel but a gothic novel and published before Fellowship I believe. To a normal ready it can be pretty hard to read but if you've gotten through IJ and JR you should be ok

Beautiful prose and descriptions, otherworldly atmosphere. Character that first glance seem merely comic but develop into sympathetic and multi-dimensional breathing creatures. Original ideas and vision, littered with meaning just beyond our understanding (thinking of Keda and the Old Man). The same goes for Gormenghast, and nearly so for Titus Alone, though that ventures into the surreal.

Kind of "Borges-like" but it's pre-Tolkien and more Gothic than fantasy but it's definitely literary and very smart

I used to suscribe to that meme of not subvocalizing. However, when I don't subvocalise I lose focus after a few pages. I get that all too commun feel where you read a whole page and don't even remember what it was about. I also find subvocalising at speech speed enrich the prose of great novels.

Pic related, the style and color of the prose takes shape only with good subvocalisation.
