It's probably the only way to force your readership to take your works for exactly what they are.

Whereas many writers and artists in general have a public presence that influences the perception of their work, in an interesting reversal, Pynchon's public presence is one created almost entirely FROM his work.

Think of JD Salinger, someone else who stayed largely out of the spotlight, but because all people had to go off of was his works, a fairly tame literary figure was put onto him. Going off of Gravity's Rainbow though, you have the image of this impossible counterculture myth at the helm of Pynchon's works, cobbled together mostly from the characters he created.

I don't think it was on purpose, but I have no doubt once it happened Pynchon decided not to interrupt it.
