Has anyone read this? I finished it the other day and think it's an essential read for people trying to understand what postmodernism is, and the forces that led to its rise.

My main criticisms are with 1) Hicks' thesis that postmodernism is a result of butthurt from socialism failing, which I don't think is true at all, 2) his conclusion that postmodernism is a rejection of enlightenment ideals; this may be partly true, in a way, but current strains of leftism are more correctly viewed as the twisted end result of enlightenment ideals, and 3) Hicks' failure to draw any attention to the jewish question.

On the last issue, I cannot fault an academic for not addressing this openly, especially when they drop as many clues as Hicks does in the book; at a certain point the reader has to connect the dots and figure out jewish problem on their own. But referring to Frankfurt School jews as "German philosophers," Derrida as "French," and overall skirting around this essential ethnic component, which the author was no doubt aware of, is disingenuous.

There are also many parallels between Explaining Postmodernism and the Culture of Critique, so many in fact that I have trouble believing Hicks had not read MacDonald's seminal work prior to writing it.

Good book, though, a must read for those interested in postmodernism.
