>It really is a nice theory. The only defect I think it has is probably common to all philosophical theories. It's wrong.
>It’s when I finished studying it, at the point where I stopped believing in philosophy, that I began to read Nietzsche.
>“It’s very famous that Wittgenstein had two periods—the early Wittgenstein, and the late Wittgenstein,” said Unger. “In the later period he’s really not thinking much of philosophy and says we should stop doing it, and the best thing we can hope for is for therapists to get philosophers to stop.”
>Contradictions are sources of power. Unexplainability and strangeness are indicators of strength.
>A morning-glory at my window satisfies me more than the metaphysics of books.
> I accept reality and dare not question it.
> Whatever satisfies the soul is truth.
> Wisdom is not finally tested in the schools, Wisdom cannot be pass'd from one having it to another not having it. Wisdom is of the soul, is not susceptible of proof, is its own proof.
> I am certain of nothing but of the holiness of the Heart’s affections and the truth of Imagination—What the imagination seizes as Beauty must be truth—whether it existed before or not—for I have the same Idea of all our Passions as of Love they are all in their sublime, creative of essential Beauty—In a Word, you may know my favorite Speculation by my first Book and the little song I sent in my last—which is a representation from the fancy of the probable mode of operating in these Matters—The Imagination may be compared to Adam’s dream—he awoke and found it truth.

How is it that every philosophical position is susceptible to weakness? How come the only way philosophy is 'futile' is because it isn't practical? What about the idea that inquiry itself is futile?

What about the poet's conception of truth, logic, knowledge, and wisdom? Is this in important ways superior to philosophical thought?

I despise logic and rational argument, and I live for pure experience and life itself. A philosophical mind will always be overcome with paralysis and a fatal inability to understand the world. It's just not how a mind is meant to live. But experiencing life, not thinking too hard in that bottomless pit, and experiencing the joys of memory and sensation is the perfect way to live.

The funny thing about this is that it resembles faith vs. fact debates. "Don't believe in something because it makes you feel good." But what would be left? And isn't rational truth the thing that gives you satisfaction anyway? Has anyone ever really embraced a truth they didn't want?

What's the best Danish edition of Fear and Trembling? I'm not a Dane but I've learned the language and I do not want to read any translations.

My apologies if making this thread is inappropriate.

Is it ok if I read most of Plato and Aristotle, then jump straight to Kierkegaard and Nietzsche? Will I be missing out on way too much if I skip Kant and Hegel? Should secondary sources suffice? My interest in philosophy is Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and other phenomenologists.

Also, which order should I read Kierkegaard and Nietzsche? I keep seeing varying lists for both of them.

One last thing. Is Adorno's book on Kierkegaard worth reading?

Is it just me or did this guy have a lot more going on in his life than I would be led to believe by stiff academic types. In addition to his published works, he maintained a 10,000+ page private journal. What the hell was going on that gave him so much to write about his personal life? Towards his death he wrote that he expected "not only his authorship but his whole life would become the subject of academic study". What did he mean by that?
