Just finished Dune and started Dune Messiah. My favorite moment so far is when Alia called herself a freak and Hera immediatrly went to comfort her, cute as hell

I'm a couple chapters in, and it's pretty confusing so far, there are so many terms I don't know, and I have to keep flipping to the dictionary in the back of the book. It's very interesting though, and I want to see what happens next.

Is the Dune series any good? What about just the first book?

I picked up a copy of Dune today so I could finally start over and read this sucker all the way through, but something's bugging me.

This book's dimensions are 4.25" x 7.5". Why? Why are books printed like this? My copy of Starship Troopers has the same dimensions. Why? What benefit can there possibly be of making it so tall? Isn't 4.25 x 7 the industry standard? Why the extra half-inch in height? It's not aesthetically pleasing; it looks like a damn PSP game case.

I know this isn't a big deal, but it just looks so wrong to my eyes and it means there's no way I can fit this in a pants pocket or anything to carry around with me. Why do this?

Why didn't Paul use his prescience to see himself falling into the prescience trap, before he fell into it? It would have saved the universe a few thousand years of worm-tyranny, and would have kept the Honored Matres from even existing.

Just finished Dune. Are the 20 some sequels worth reading?

I absolutely loved the Dune franchise when I was a teenager,but in going back and reading the first few books in the series I have come to the conclusion that Frank Herbert's prose are absolutely terrible.

What books have you changed your opinion about over the years?

Was it just me, or was all of the environment/ecology stuff a little preachy? Otherwise I thought it was great.

At your recommendation I read this, and it was fucking great. The question I have is: are the sequels any good? I'd really like to read more as the ending is pretty open, but I've heard all the other books pretty much butcher this masterpiece.
