Hey /lit/,
There is a huge sale of books in my dorm at the moment. There are mainly classics. Could you recommend some must read non-English language books that would be worth buying?

Mind taking a look at my first attempt at writing for pleasure? Barely over a hundred words and I don't even know where I'm going with it yet.

Is /lit/ willing to look at my first attempt at creative writing for pleasure?
I have barely written over a hundred words, but it sure as hell took me a while. I don't even know where I'm going with it just yet.

How many books do you read per year, /lit/?

Earlier this year I decided I would read 50 books from the first day of July 2011 to the first day of July 2012, so I'm wondering how my reading rate compares to /lit/'s standards.

Alright I'm looking for a decent book, most likely a medium sized book, just something i read during some down time in class. Something that can really get my attention.

>The Handmaid's Tale
>Slaughterhouse Five
>Animal Farm
>Cat's Cradle
>The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
>The Great Shark Hunt
>Hell's Angels

I am newly addicted to reading and I must have more awesome books. My taste spectrum is broad. Please recommend me some more titles/authors and what you enjoy about them!

Dear /lit/

What do you feel are the most important books of the 21st century so far?

A few suggestions:
White Teeth, The Corrections, Against the Day, 2666, The Road, The Pale King (maybe, probably not though)

I rarely read recent literature, and when I do I tend to stick to the most popular titles because I don't know where to start. Mostly because I find it impossible to keep up with new releases.

What have I missed?

-Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
- God Bless You Dr. Kevorkian by Kurt Vonnegut (drunk friend recommended)
-The Conquest of Happiness by Bertrand Russell (hippy-esque friend recommended)

or should I pick something else up?

My 4th week just started and I have to ask, why would someone turn in over 100 chess books at once? Why would someone HAVE that many chess books?
Also, can anyone tell me why paperclips are so popular as bookmarks? I must pull at least 10 or 12 of those a day out of incoming books.

Is it just me or has there been a somewhat recent trend of people putting more effort into looking well read rather then being well read.

Spends more time choosing the perfect book that looks nice on the wall then reading it

Looking up book porn

Putting more effort into showing off the book they are reading to others

Other assort crap like that. How often do we get some camwhore holding up a fresh book they have no interest in reading for the attention of others?

Take the twist from one book and apply it to another.
Example: Fight Club + Lord of the Rings:
Frodo and Gollum are the same person.

I'm thinking about opening up an independent book store that focuses on used books.

Any advice?

Hey /lit/. I posted this on /adv/ a few months ago (August, a week after it happened), but they gave me shit advice, and I want to pursue this, so I figured I'd ask /lit/, since this is relevant to /lit/. It will take 2-3 posts to tell this story, so sit tight:

In my city there is a small independent bookstore, primarily focused on buying/selling used books. Although I have been there a few times before, a recent trip on a Wednesday three weeks ago was....different. What was different? The cashier was a beautiful young woman, no older than 21. I would have talked to her then and there, but she came as such of a shock I didn't even consider it until I was driving home (I'm used to the owner, who is a 40-something year old woman).

Immediately I began to plan my next visit. I would buy a wide variety of literature in hopes I would buy something she was interested in and would comment on. I would get there at the same time I saw her last time (11 AM or so). I would slowly woo her over the course of several weeks, eventually asking her out.

6 days passed, leading up to Tuesday night. I had my morning routine organized in my bathroom. I would shower, shave, and have a fair sized breakfast before I left the house at 10:30 AM. I was pumped . Alas, the adreniline coursing through my veins made it difficult to sleep. I didn't fall asleep until 6 AM. I honestly didn't think much of it. So I lost a few hours of sleep, big deal.

I woke up, it was 10:45. “Fuck!” I thought. I threw on yesterdays cargo shorts and a death metal tshirt and headed out the door. I arrived at around 11:10, and she was just walking out the door. Crestfallen, I idly browsed the science fiction section, and picked up 1984 and Old Man's War.

Where would be the best place to sell a load of books? They're practically new and I'm looking to make as much money as possible.
