I can't believe that it was initially published as non-fiction given how incredibly convoluted its events are, how heavy handed its symbolism is, and how one dimensional its characters are. Everything about it screams "FICTIONAL" and not just "fictional" but "bad" fiction as well.

At the beginning of the novel, where it talked about how she was locked in the red room or whatever the fuck it was called, and how it terrified her because someone died in there, and the author just kept heaping these unjust cruelties onto Jane just to garner more sympathy from the reader; I could not stop rolling my eyes at how ridiculous it all was.

Also, I don't buy that this book is at all feminist. When Jane goes off on her own she nearly dies because of how incompetent she is. Yeah, that's some backwards-thinking demonstration of "girl power."
