>I'm curious how it got picked
Given how thoroughly negative the reception has been here whenever it's brought up, the only explanation I can think of is that we got memed.

>Explain Tolkien
Tolkien isn't popular anymore. His work, according to kids these days, is slow and boring and hard to get.

>Just how much of a fuck up do you have to be to try and pin the real life race and nationality of fantasy characters?
I don't know, I mean a lot of modern writers love doing it, and a lot of modern fans love getting triggered when there aren't enough blacks in their fictional worlds. Why should we be any better?

Defending or accusing Denna, or Kvothe for that matter, is kind of like saying one particular piece of corn in the great big steaming pile of turd is a good corn or bad corn. It kind of feels like there's no point.

We here on /sffg/ tend to instead focus on the asshole that produced the turd: Patrick Rothfuss himself.

I've always wondered just how Middle-Earth's months and days could still be named the same as our own. You'd think it would've named these after their own gods and ancient kings.

Amidst literal books of amazing and fully thought worldbuilding, it feels like a pretty glaring oversight.

>A major issue with casting a non-white actress for Ciri is that this would also require her father and father's people to be non-white, and given that they have a hostile, aggressive and antagonist role in the story, this may have problematic connotations.

>no niggers allowed as villains, only as good guys

Yeah, this is going to be a fucking trainwreck isn't it.

Would you say Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and Cthulhu should belong to a single big studio as well?

Mark my words, we're going to get horrible fanfic-tier adaptations either way. Just the Hobbit trilogy should be indicator that even the biggest studios can fuck things up really badly, and I see absolutely no reason to feel positive about this now that they won't even be bound by Tolkien's original text. And even with the absolute best stuff, the main motivation will be money - they will be safe, easily-digestible, and all around uninteresting drek. They will just make the rich shitheads even richer, nothing more. Anything actually exciting or good about them will be an accident, rather than the desired end result.

Putting the works out to public domain will even the playing field. It will give everyone the chance to try. Is it going to produce an unimaginable amount of garbage? Yes. But I think the very best of the lot will be better, in many ways, than the safe committee-designed Hollywood moneymakers. Because these people will have not only the skill and the dedication, but passion as well, for the art rather than the paycheck. And I really would much rather support their efforts than the big studios and their investors.

Besides, who'd be forcing you to watch through all of that shit anyway?

>Malazan's magic system would probably be impossible to transcribe to a role playing setting because of how chaotic and loosely defined its power sets are.
Not really. You'd just need about a million different kind of spells.

And D&D has about that many.

I don't suppose we could... drop this line of talk and go back to fantasy and scifi, maybe to how to write a good woman character to begin with? Because I don't think any of you are going to convince anyone else of fuck-all, and it's just going to be an ugly waste of time.
