Philip K. Dick's first published novel was "Man in the High Castle." they weren't sure where to put it. But it had multiple dimensions, so they put it with sci-fi instead of general novels. The rest of his books [even voices from the street] get classified as sci-fi, just to keep the author's books together.

Brave New World and 1984 are intensely political novels. Their authors had already been classified as political writers and not science fiction authors. Ideas of multiple dimensions and things have been around for so long that books like the mirage get classified as novels now, and not as fantasy.
