I'm coming off some heavy reads and need recommendations to read something not as arduous to cleanse my palate. Preferably <200 pages and written in English.

Invisible Cities is easily the comfiest book of all time, seems like it’d fit what you’re looking for perfectly, especially with an interest in aesthetics over plot

There's something about Invisible Cities that I find almost addictive. As soon as I finish reading it I just want to start over again, which I’ve never had with any other book. The word comfy is overused but it’s the best description I’ve got; there’s something so singular and strange about it, but it is so comforting at the same time. Wish I could find anything else like it. I’ve read it more than a dozen times, not sure exactly how many.

So is this just the same thing, over and over, in small bites, throughout the whole book?

I love this book and want to read more like it.

>like it
by which I mean, short chapters, casual but superb writing with interesting things. I don't know, clearly I'm shit at describing things.

I'll try to briefly describe the book in case you're unfamiliar with it. The premise basically: Kublai Khan is old, sitting around his palace. Marco Polo is describing cities in the empire for him. (This is not related at all to that crappy show Marco Polo which had a similar premise)

But you could easily skip the Kublai/Marco chapters (they occur once every few chapters), each chapter is a description of some city, sometimes by the architecture or how citizens interact with eachother, or its history, etc. Some could be real cities, some are obviously surreal. They're all, in essence, "ways of looking at a city."

In some chapters Calvino talks of cars and airplanes, and it's suggested somewhere that Marco and Kublai are nicknames of two beggars sorting through trash and waxing eloquent about cities.

I think it's a really beautiful book, and I'd like more books that might feel "similar", that is, easy reads but very beautiful.

Don't bother suggesting Brautigan, I'm already a huge fan! Thanks for your help.
