Yes, pretty much everyone agrees you might as well skip Gardens if it feels like a slog.
Even Erikson admits that its a bit of a mess and its fine to start with Deadhouse Gates. It doesn't pick off from where Gardens left off, so you won't be missing out on much and even if you don't intend to continue with Malazan then everything to do with The Chain of Dogs and Coltaine is pretty fucking good.

Take anything I say at face value though. I liked Gardens from the get-go.
