Take your pic. Personally I enjoy reading about artisans throughout history to enjoy the sense of humaneness.

My favorite anime genre is 00s iyashikei, here's a chart I saved that has other books I've enjoyed on it that I think have a similar kind of vibe. I'm chasing that feeling in every medium.

I dont think a pure expression of peace/love/joy is possible except as the most disgusting kitsch possible, because any work that does not deal with darkness and tragedy ultimately comes off a delusional fantasy. True works of positivity move through tragedy, or redeem tragedy. There are many books like those in picrel that manage to be deeply joyful by doing this.

I feel like youre just talking about the bible in abstract, without actually considering what it says.
Have you read Ecclesiastes? Job? any of the old testament books really? And even if you mean just the gospels its hard not to see its narrative structure as ultimately a divine tragedy.

Hard to say without knowing what’s going on with you but I’ll recommend some stuff that helped me when I was down.

Herman Hesse Steppenwolf & Siddhartha

Kazantzakis Zorba the Greek

Kerouac Dharmabumbs

Scruton Beauty

Bhikkhu Bodhi In The Buddha’s Words

Epictetus Discourses

Depends on why you are depressed and what your personal struggles are OP. What worked for me was a combination of Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, various works on Buddhism and stoicism, Zorba the Greek, The Tartar Steep, Atomic Habits, Beauty, and etc. Of course a book alone won’t help you so much as help you diagnose what ever sickness you have in your soul, it’s up to you to mend it. It sounds corny but really you have to try to break out of your negative, cynical, and neurotic ways of thinking and learn to find happiness, beauty and internal peace.

Looking for books (novels, history, philosophy, poetry, letters, anything) that instill the feeling of a contented, quiet, and zen type being in the world? Pic related is good but I need more
