I am reading Ulysses rn and it reminds me a bit of Lynch because there are small bits that peek through the text and are never explained, but they linger with you long after you get past them.

I used to read maybe an average amount in my youth and stopped almost completely at the advent of digital media. I want to get back into it and have been reading here and there. I tried pic related and while I can appreciate its beauty, it was too much for my little non-reader's mind.

I am currently reading Mike Tyson's autobiography. It's entertaining I guess, but somewhat lacking in any depth. It's just a story of a crazy boxer. Recently I've read Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Old Man and the Sea, Animal Farm. I loved Animal Farm and liked the others.

What books would you recommend that are both stimulating and something I can really sink my teeth into? Is Rushdie too hard? I want to read something that will grow my mind and push my reading level.

>I don't really get it, but I kinda like it

I'm about 300 pages into this so far and I'm really not sure how I feel about it. I loved Dubliners and Portrait of the Artist but I kind of think that Joyce fell for the stream of consciousness meme too hard. There are certainly some beautiful moments but the constant changes in the narrative make it harder to keep track of just what's going on or what's being said than any work of philosophy I've read. The part at the newspaper office I thought was a particular pain in the ass to get through.

Gabler or 1960/1961 edition? Does it even matter for a casual reader? I just finished Portrait and I'm eager to jump into this. Thus far I haven't found Joyce to be as profound as I've read (big fan of Faulkner and Woolf here), but as I understand this is his magnum opus anyways.

I want to study Ulysses but I’m not sure what version is the best for that. I’m aware of the gabler version but im also aware of the controversy about it; is the controversy that big of an issue?
Also I’d love a response on this question
>would you say that reading an academical copy of a book detracts from the experience itself? I.E. would one miss out on something if they read a copy that’s been dissected and laid out for them already?
