Thanks for the wishes, I'm hoping for a miracle recovery but it's not looking good. He lost a lot of blood, so much so they couldn't tell what he actually had in the scan. Next 48 hours is critical.

Seeing him like this was rough and it will haunt me for a while. I had to comfort my mom too throughout all of this. Still, I'm glad I could see him and talk to him when he was still conscious; my older brother couldn't by the time he got there he was put to sleep for surgery.

i'll add, don't know why i didnt mention this initially: the french revolution was the biggest contender outside germany. lots of scholarship here and angles to attack from: the problem of political ritual (kerzer), the problem of expertise and art (j-j david as "painted of the people"; lynn hunt and t j clark have some great stuff here), festivals and spectacles, etc. etc. a very coherent body of ideas and case studies in application.
i'll eventually provide a reading list on this topic as well.

How does one quantify suffering? What makes, for example, the Holocaust worse than the Bosnian genocide? - Is it number of deaths? That's way too shallow and unsophisticated of an answer considering the brutal and tortuous things that went on in both wars. Or, if suffering is purely qualitative, what makes one's suffering worse than another, especially on a group scale?

That's a better chart.

>My goal with reading these would be to eventually enjoy all of the stories, tragedies & epics written by the greeks. I want to get a good historical perspective too

With this in mind,

>Bibliotheca - Apollodorus
>The Illiad - Homer
>The Odyssey - Homer

If you enjoyed the Illiad more than the Odyssey read a few of these next:

>The Histories - Herodotus
>The History of the Peloponnesian War - Thucydides
>The Anabasis (of Cyrus) - Xenophon
>The Anabasis of Alexander - Arrian (Not included in this chart, but if you like the prior 3 and Illiad, you will like it)
>The Republic - Plato

If you enjoyed the Odyssey more than the Illiad read a few of these next:
>Medea and Other Plays - Euripedes
>The Oresteia - Aeschylus
>Lysistrata / The Acharnians / The Clouds - Aristophanes
>The Three Theban Plays - Sophocles

I don't think so personally. I think an asteroid or large solar event is the most plausible doomsday scenario. Plagues might be able to ravage a continent again but not planet killer total depopulation. Even the black plague, arguably the worst plague is known history only managed to wipe out 1/3 of Europe.

There is some thought that the last great solar event nearly wiped out humanity some 12000 years ago causing lightning storms in different places all over the world that struck the ground at the same pace as normal rainfall; leaving only people who could get to safety.

The native american Hopi tribe still has stories about the event, they sought refuge underground like the initial inhabitants of the underground city of Derinkuyu

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derinkuyu_underground_city

This is also the foundation myth for the Zoroastrian religion.

So I've seen a lot of people posting that stupid theory picture with the cartoon girls on it, and i just wanted to know if there was a couple of books that really went into more detail about what marxist believe, that doesn't involve reading 30 books. Just FYI I am not a Marxist, or an aspiring one, I already dislike what know about the philosophy, for I enjoy the beauty of life! I've already read the manifesto.

yeah he really is, his mindless rants amount to nothing at the end of book. just pleasing the jewish master by statements like "jews trully are superior, we should let them in more" "they don't deserve the hate [the jews]"he eventually ended up crazy, just when his youth fadded. Makes you think.

I want to learn more about ECONOMICS too but since it's 1. not my area and 2. not my main field of interest I'm not sure I want to invest a looot of time into it, and those huge reading lists and textbooks I tend to find are a bit discouraging.

I'm thinking about, instead, making a list of all important thinkers, books and papers in economic history and then just reading about them online, in encyclopedias or any secondary source I can find on google books or JSTOR that will give me a brief idea of its content. Concomitantly I'd get an introductory textbook of wide use to learn the current basics. Is this a good methodology or will I end up with too many gaps on my understanding and full of misinformation?

Hey, /lit/.
I was wondering if you guys could recommend me a book. Growing up I never had a dad, and my mother wasn't loving in any meaningful way. Most of my life I've been apathetic about everything, I was never beaten or bullied, just ignored. I was never angry at the world or people, just cold and indifferent. I felt pointless, I didn't have rage at some injustice, just emptiness. No one cared, and neither did I. I never wanted friends to depend on me in fear of not being as dependable as they think, I never wanted a girlfriend because I couldn't imagine someon genuinely loving me. However the past year I've been changing.
I've been seeing things in a softer light, I want to meet new people and see in their mind, how they think. I'm interested in people now, I find them fascinating and fun to talk to and I want to see people happy and proud of themselves. I want to be a good person and see others grow due to my influence. I want to show my vulnerabilities to people more than I used to. I also recently have been getting a stronger libido for lack of better word. I used to look at females very matter of fact, but now it's different. I notice a girl's skin more, how soft it is, how fragile she is, how at their best women can be a beautiful mother. I want to be a part of my future partner's life, to grow and explore with her.
So, is there any book that captures this sensation? This feeling of stepping out of the shadows and wanting to see the good in things. Thanks in advance guys.
