Finished First Law. Pretty good over all, very fun. Could have perhaps cut some of the fantasy sex scenes from book 2.
Are the stand alone novels and the second trilogy any good?

I first read pic related 15 years ago and thought it was hilarious. Would it hold up on a re-read?

Okay b/lit/ches, I haven't read a lot of fantasy and want to start with something "easy" to read.
I'm between two series/books whatever.
The First Law and Mistborn.
You decide which one I go for.

The writing is really fun and glokta is awesome. Can't say the plot is that interesting so far though. The world's kinda bland too.

Finished pic related. Seemed like a 500 page long build-up for what's to come next. I enjoyed the characters though. Starting Before They are Hanged soon.

>read this
>shit prose and retarded romance, sometimes cliched but otherwise fine
>suddenly retarded separate/multiple personality bullshit at the end
There better be a good reason for this. I fucking HATE that trope.

Why does this always appear on top 20 Recommended Fantasy lists?!

What am i missing? It doesn't deserve to appear alongside Tolkien, Moorcock, Erikson, Donaldson

Its bland, full of plot holes and has dialogue that isnt authentic to the setting. It reads like young adult fiction.

Please explain yourselves

Why is the Union army so shit? If they just fought and won a really long war 10 years ago surely they'll have a fuckton of experienced officers and soldiers.

Why does Abercrombie think drill and armour are bad and that nobles have no idea what they're doing.

Just finished the The First Law trilogy.
Was pretty fucking amazing. Glokta probably became my all time favorite character too, so that's a bonus. A shame there isn't a conclusion to the story yet, though.

Highly recommend it.

Is LOTR worth reading?

How is this considered epic fantasy? I'm 90% done and so far no major events have happened. A rich kid spent several hundred pages taking fencing lessons and being spoiled. A cripple tortured some people. Some other characters spent most of the book walking to the main city with very little happening on the way. Then an old man took the rich kid and the cripple on a tour of an old empty house. So far there's no larger plot other than vague promises of a war with the North sometime months from now.
