Thanks anon. Spanish is actually my native language. I don't really expect italian to be hard but who knows.
I'll try to use the italian version of LLPI, "L' Italiano secondo il Metodo Natura" to see if the method works for me.

In the context of the books it means pretended or fancied, like "the jew bankers [pretended/thought/fancied they were] in Cartago".
it's mostly used for poseurs. "ellos se las daban de escritores", "they fancied themselves/pretended to be writers"
It literally means "were given" I think, when the noun is feminine
>en el pasado las muñecas se las daban a las niñas y los balones a los niños
>in the past the dolls were given to the girls and the balls to the boys
