I love shitty US covers. I still remember people bitching about the Gardens of the Moon original cover. I couldn't even find a decent quality image of it online since they replaced it with the same art sans woman.

I just looked up this guy's series of reviews on Appendix n and it seems like an interesting read and challenge. He says before he started the task he was really only familiar with Tolkien, and to be honest I'm pretty much in the same boat. Might be a good thing to add to my backlog
