Is this a good example on how to successfully write a story converging on the last 100 pages, with a very large number of characters? How does he do it, technically?

So i saw this was in /lit/'s wiki in the fantasy section. Im about halfway through and im wondering when I'm supposed to figure out what the hell is going on. It feels like this book is the third in a series instead of the first. I have no clue how anything works or what the hell is going on. Does it get better at all? If i just slug my way through this book, do the other ones in the series make sense, or am I going to be in a state of perpetual confusion?
