The Moomin books by Tove Jansson.
Like all good "children's" literature, it's better appreciated as an adult. This, of course, goes for the ones mentioned in the OP as well.

There's no girl protagonist but the Moomin books are beautiful and calm in a melancholy way.

The Little House series is nice and does have a girl protagonist. It's based on the real life of a family in 19th century America.
