Controversial opinion: he keeps the meter correct which is admirable and he is certainly a verbose man but he is very awkward to read at times with his odd sentence structure and his overly strict attempt at not straying too far from Homeric syntax. This leads to odd sentences which seem to change subject matter or thought midway through. Robert Fagles is a superior translator because his is far more straightforward and that one should be recommended to beginners instead. Lattimore can be read later.
