I have two friends who like reading. We go to the same uni and we would often talk about literature in restaurants and cafes. They went back to their hometowns because the uni is closed. We talk online but it's not the same. We don't smoke cigarettes together anymore.

Any non-English anon here? I've never formally learned English grammar and always went by intuition. Intuition isn't always correct and I occasionally have grammatical mishaps. I'm reading a grammar book recently in the hopes that it would solidify the base, but discovering I can't write as good when I mentally try to keep the rules in check.
Is this expected? Is there a way around this?
