Part 1 and 2 were really just a series of very vaguely connected scenes. Part 3 was excellent. Here the character of Sonoko created a fine balance between the internal and external and the scenes started to built on each other. Part 4 was weaker but still managed to expand on some of the themes. Overall the structure seems pretty weak given that "Mishima spent two months deciding on what to write." It's ironic that he called Snow Country a "trashy patchwork", because this really did feel like a somewhat loose patchwork. I think it would have worked better if he had focused the novel on Sonoko and introduced Omi in the same time frame so he could still write about the same conflicts. The biographical approach forced him to make these constant jumps in time which fucked up the dramatic structure and tension.
